💌 when grief, exhaustion, and real life interrupt your rhythm and the work feels out of reach
what it looks like to steward the work inside a real life
💌 Welcome to Take Heart Daily, a Creatorly series for gentle encouragement as you show up for the work God gave you. I hope these quiet reminders support you in the season you're in, wherever you are today.
A couple of weeks ago, I missed the rhythm I had been working to rebuild. We had to say goodbye to our thirteen-year-old German Shepherd.
I thought I might write at some point over the weekend. When the time came, I couldn’t get there.
And I’ve been thinking about that since, not with guilt, but with honesty, because I think it touches something a lot of us feel in the day-to-day experience of trying to be faithful with the work God gave us.
We talk about consistency like the hardest part is just deciding to commit. And there’s truth in that. At some point we do have to stop waiting for perfect conditions and take the next faithful step with what we have.
But real life doesn’t pause for that. Kids get sick. Grief comes close. Your body gets tired. Something that was supposed to take an hour takes the whole day. A weekend you thought might include catching up becomes a weekend where the kindest thing you can do is move slowly and be present where you are.
And then when the space opens again, you don’t always bounce right back. You stand at the edge of the work and feel the strange weight of returning, even though the work still matters and even though that struggle doesn’t mean you failed.
I think this is where a lot of us get tangled. We confuse grace with quitting, or we confuse commitment with pressure.
Grace can become the excuse we use to disappear from the work completely. Commitment can become the standard we use to shame ourselves when we can’t perform at the same pace through every season. Neither one is the kind of steadiness God is actually forming in us.
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
- Isaiah 43:19 NIV
What I keep coming back to is that God doesn’t pretend the place is easier than it is. He calls it wilderness. He calls it wasteland. He names it honestly and then tells His people He is making a way there.
There is so much mercy in that.
Sometimes the work God gives us feels like wilderness. You’re doing what you know to do, the writing, the creating, the next small act of obedience, and the path forward still isn’t clear. Some days feel steady. Other days feel dry and repetitive, like you’re putting one foot in front of the other without seeing much change beneath the surface.
I used to think those harder days meant I needed better discipline. I’m learning that sometimes they’re just part of being human. The work God gives us isn’t separate from the life He’s placed us in. It has to be stewarded inside real days, with real limits, real grief, real tiredness, and real dependence on Him.
Stewarding the work might be less about doing more and more about staying present enough to notice what God is already doing with what you’ve given Him. Keeping your hands open and your attention on Him rather than on outcomes you can’t control.
One thing I am learning is that the work you do in the steady seasons quietly carries you through the harder ones. A draft you started, an idea you wrote down, a note you saved without knowing why. Those small things become the bridge back when the blank page feels like more than you have to give.

What helps you know the difference between needing rest and avoiding the work? I’d love to hear from you.
When life changes the rhythm, you don’t have to rebuild from shame. You can return to the place you left off and take the next honest step. Some days the first step back is a sentence. Other days it is stillness, because the work God gave you has to flow from somewhere, and that somewhere is Him.
And some days the faithful thing is rest. Only God knows the difference between rest and avoidance in each of our lives, which is why the answer looks different for everyone and in every season.
Grace lets us rest without deciding the work is over, and commitment helps us come back without needing the return to become a dramatic recommitment. Both can be true at the same time.
You’re allowed to do the work that way. And you’re allowed to let go of every past attempt that didn’t go the way you hoped.
The invitation is not to punish yourself back into productivity. It is to return with honesty, with open hands, and with trust that God can make a way even here.
God is making a way in the wilderness.
Take heart,
